bandIn 2002 Norah Jones became a world star right out of the blue when she released her debut album. Come Away With Me sold like hot cakes and she won almost every award there was to win, to the delight of her record company, Blue Note Records. Before she became fully aware it she was widely known as the New York singer who plays romantic and bittersweet songs at the piano.
Jones mixed pop, folk, soul and country with a touch of jazz in her music. The mood of her songs is mostly dreamy, with slow country rock songs, some rugged musical structures, and a bluesy feeling with relaxed funk.
After the mega success of Come Away With Me in 2002 the albums Feels Like Home (2004) and Not Too Late (2007), both million sellers, followed. Alongside actor Jude Law she made an excursion into the film world as an actress in My Blueberry Nights by Wong Kar-Wai. Norah Jones has a frail appearance yet she has grown into a 30-year old self-confident artist on stage.
On her latest album, The Fall, which appeared last year, Jones found the time ripe for choosing new paths. After an eight years’ relationship with her bassist Lee Alexander, co-author of a lot numbers and producer of the album Not Too Late, Jones decided to try a different approach.
She gathered a completely new band around her and relied on playing guitar more instead of her position at the piano. On the new album we hear among of sidemen Marc Ribot and Smokey Hormel, who both paid dues with Tom Waits. The album was produced by Jacquire King (Kings or Leon, Modest Mouse, Tom Waits). The Fall is a not a big turnaround artistically. But the album does show that Norah Jones is willing to tread new paths and that gradually she sends her music into other musical directions. |
